| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SPARTA - We’ve just witnessed
another example of the old adage, “Every vote counts!” Because some of the
candidates did not get above 40% of the vote in the July 20 primary election, there will
be another runoff on August 17. This was particularly true with the Republican
gubernatorial and 5th Congressional District candidates. Now those who placed first
and second in the primary election will compete again for those positions.
For US Congress:
Vernon Robinson
Virginia Foxx (Won Primary Runoff 08/17/2004)
For Governor:
Richard Vinroot (Withdrew 07/22/2004)
Patrick J. Ballantine
On the local level, the Republican winners in the primary were:

Roger Wood
One other observation of interest. On a state-wide basis only 11% of
registered voters participated in this election. In Alleghany County, 34% of
